Step Into Shakespeare’s World
Tucked away in Helsingør, Denmark, Kronborg Castle looms over the Øresund strait like a guardian of history. Known to literary fans as Elsinore from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a blend of Renaissance grandeur and mysterious legends. Ready to explore?

A Fortress with Flair
Built in the 1420s by King Eric VII, Kronborg wasn’t just a pretty castle—it was a strategic powerhouse controlling access between the Baltic and North Seas. Its imposing walls and cannons once demanded tolls from passing ships. Fast forward to the 16th century, and King Frederick II transformed it into a lavish Renaissance palace. Wander the 62-meter-long ballroom (one of Europe’s longest!) or descend into the shadowy casemates, where the statue of Holger the Dane—a mythical hero—stands guard, said to awaken if Denmark is ever in peril.

Shakespeare immortalized it as Hamlet’s home, and today, you can catch live performances in the courtyard during summer. I saw one last year—chills guaranteed!

Picture Time!

Travel Tip
Visit in summer for the Hamlet performances, or go off-season for a quieter, moodier vibe. Bring a picnic and enjoy the views—it’s a history buff’s paradise.
